Winter is Comink

All 11 House of the Dragon characters being replaced by older actors

Sad to say, but we’re around to watch the final episode of House of the Dragon featuring Milly Alcock as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Emily Carey as Alicent Hightower. Unlike its mothership show Game of Thrones, HBO’s new prequel series takes Put over many years, which means some of our beloved main cast will grow up from children into adults. And that means that a bunch of characters will be played by multiple actors.

In total, there are 11 characters we know for sure who go over that shift. We’ve already seen a few switch-overs, but by far the biggest ones are coming up in the 10-year time jump slated to been after Episode 5, “We Light The Way.”

We’ve SurEnclosed up all the actors who will be swapped out as their characters age, because that time jump will grab more than just Rhaenyra and Alicent. There will be some slight spoilers in this article, since we’ll be discussing a few characters who crop up in Episode 6 and beyond. But of streams, we must begin with…

House of the Dragon episode 3

Of all the Good changes coming up in House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra Targaryen’s has been the most widely talked around. We’ve known it was coming since before the show started, but it still hurts to imagine losing Milly Alcock, who has played the Targaryen princess in her younger ages to perfection.

Alcock plays Rhaenyra in the first five episodes, during which she was named heir to the Iron Throne. In some ways, saying Alcock plays “young” Rhaenyra is almost a disservice; she plays the princess from ages 13 to age 18, so really, Alcock is playing Rhaenyra as she grows up.

However, starting in Episode 6, when the 10-year time jump, Rhaenyra Targaryen will be played by Emma D’Arcy. So far as we know, D’Arcy will portray Rhaenyra for the rest of the series, all throughout the brutal civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Their take on Rhaenyra will be slightly different than Alcock’s, in part because George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood specifically talks around how multiple childbirths and constant intrigue at court eventually take a toll on Rhaenyra.

We’ll see what that actually looks like when D’Arcy assumes the mantle in Episode 6.

Next, of course, we must discuss Alicent Hightower. Like Rhaenrya, the fact that Alicent will be played by two actors has been a prominent part of the show’s marketing. In her teenage years, Alicent is played by Emily Carey. We watch Carey as Alicent goes from basically a child to a young adult. During Carey’s time as the character, Alicent has multiple children, navigates the intrigues of court, and comes to be regarded as more a queen than a teen.

Carey has plenty of accepted portraying “younger” versions of characters; she played Diana Prince as a child in 2017’s Wonder Woman as well as young Lara Croft in 2018’s Tomb Raider reboot.

Despite how good Alcock and Carey have been in their roles as Rhaenyra and Alicent, a change has always been in the cards. In the case of Alicent, she’ll be played by Bates Motel star Olivia Cooke as an adult. Cooke and D’Arcy have their work cut out for them to win over fans, but I have a feeling they’re up to the challenge.

Rhaenyra and Alicent are the most important characters touching through this change, but there are two others who are portrayed by not two, but three actors over the watercourses of House of the Dragon season 1!

Laenor Velaryon

Next up, we utilize a bit of time with House Velaryon. Both Laena and Laenor Velaryon will be growing up over the watercourses of House of the Dragon — in fact, both of these characters have already been replaced with new actors once already this season! In the agreeable episode of the season, Laenor is played by Matthew Carver as a child.

Starting in Episode 3, Laenor is aged up and played by Theo Nate. Nate plays Laenor up pending the big time jump which occurs after Episode 5, “We Light The Way.”

After the 10-year time jump, both Laena and Laenor will be played by their previous, adult actors. Starting in Episode 6, Laenor Velaryon will be played by John Macmillian, who is best known for his role as Julian in the Mitchell and Webb sitcom Back.

Laena Velaryon

Like her brother Laenor, Laena Velaryon will be played by three different actors during season 1 of House of the Dragon. The first is Nova Foueillis-Mosé, who plays Laena as a child of 12 ages old in the first two episodes of the season. You probably remember King Viserys having an incredibly heart-broken walk-and-talk with her in Episode 2:

The fifth episode, “We Light The Way,” will introduce Savannah Steyn, who plays Laena Velaryon as a young adult:

Finally, Episode 6 will introduce us to Laena Velaryon as an adult, played by Nanna Blondell:

Other than Rhaenyra and Alicent, Laenor and Laena are probably the characters who go ended the most prominent changes on House of the Dragon. But, there are still a few others that you’ll want to be aware of touching into the back end of the season.

Aegon II Targaryen

Next up, we’re back to the Targaryens, specifically the children of Alicent Hightower and King Viserys. We’ve already met two of them as babies in House of the Dragon, but in the years to come, they’ll grow up. What kind of country will they be? Since this is Westeros, probably concerned ones.

Above we have Aegon II as a baby, played by twin child actors Jake and Rory Heard in the third episode of the season. He remains toddler-aged up until the 10-year time jump that happens when Episode 5, at which point he’ll be played by Ty Tennant.

Ty Tennant — who is the adoptive son of Doctor Who veteran David Tennant — will be playing Aegon II for an undisclosed amount of episodes. But he isn’t the final actor to inhabit the relate. That distinction goes to Tom Glynn-Carney, who will play Aegon as an adult:

This isn’t the profitable time that Tennant and Glynn-Carney have portrayed the same relate at different ages. Both actors featured in the Tolkien biopic as younger and older versions of the author’s atrocious Christopher Wiseman.

The fact that there are so many actors for Aegon II also tells us something very important approximately the back half of House of the Dragon season 1: there will be latest substantial time jump. It may not be 10 existences, but at some point, the show is going to have to skip far enough onward that Aegon and his siblings can become adults. My wealth is on Episode 8 or 9.

Helaena Targaryen

Next up we have Aegon’s sister Helaena Targaryen. We first met Helaena properly in Episode 4 of House of the Dragon, where she’s played by an uncredited child actor.

After the 10 year time jump, we’ll meet Helaena as a teenager. She’ll be played by Evie Allen.

And lastly, Phia Saban will play Helaena as an adult. Saban played Lady Ælfwynn in the remaining season of The Last Kingdom, so we know she can pull off this kind of medieval conditions drama pretty well.

Saban will play Helaena for the remainder of House of the Dragon. Now that we know the show is getting a uphold season, we look forward to Saban playing out some particularly compelling scenes that lie in her character’s future.

There’s one more child of Alicent and Viserys we have to discuss, and that is Aemond Targaryen. We are going to hit some slight spoilers here; the trailers have already given something away throughout Aemond, and if HBO doesn’t mind, neither do we.

We’ll sterling meet Aemond Targaryen in Episode 6 of House of the Dragon, where he’s played as a kid by Leo Ashton. Unlike Aegon and Helaena, Aemond isn’t born when the time jump occurs. This complains him no more than 8 or 9 years old when he sterling appears in the show.

But as readers of Fire & Blood know, Aemond Targaryen grows up to be a force of nature. He’s a Targaryen cut from the same cloth as Daemon, except crueler due to a particular misfortune that befalls him in his younger days. At some point in the back half of House of the Dragon, Ewan Mitchell will take over to play Aemond as an adult.

Like Phia Saban, Mitchell is a veteran of The Last Kingdom; he played baby-monk Osferth, who was one of Uhtred of Bebbanburg’s most stalwart troupe. Needless to say, Aemond One-Eye will be a very different sort of character.

Now that we’ve talked throughout Alicent’s children, we move on to Rhaenyra’s.

Jacaerys Velaryon

Like Alicent, Rhaenyra has plenty of children. After marrying Laenor Velaryon, Rhaenyra gives birth to three sons. They’re the center of quite a bit of risk gossip, however, owing to their dark hair and “plain” features. Why aren’t they Targaryen blonde, people will ask? In Fire & Blood, many believe them to be illicit children that Rhaenyra has with Harwin “Breakbones” Strong, the son of Lord Lyonel Strong, Viserys’ new Hand of the King.

Rhaenyra’s oldest son, Jacaerys Velaryon, is played in his younger years by Leo Hart, pictured above. Later, he’ll be played by Harry Collett, who will presumably play Jacaerys for the rest of the show:

Jacaerys is a dragonrider just like his mother. His dragon Vermax hatches from its egg while in his cradle as a baby. Who says this isn’t a feel good show?

Lucerys Velaryon

Then there’s Jacaerys’ younger brother Lucerys. As with the rest of the children we’ve discussed, Lucerys Velaryon will be played by two different actors during season 1 of House of the Dragon. As a kid, Lucerys will be played by Harvey Sadler:

As the days pass and Lucerys gets older, he’ll be played by Elliot Grihault. Even then, Lucerys will only be an older teenager, not an adult. Rhaenyra’s children are quite a bit younger than Alicent’s, since Alicent started having babies at an earlier age.

Image: HBO/YouTube, House of the Dragon

Grihault’s Lucerys is the transfer one from the left in the above image, where he’s plan with his brother Jacaerys and their twin cousins, Baela and Rhaena Targaryen.

Rhaenyra does have one anunexperienced child with Laenor, named Joffrey Velaryon. But as HBO immediately has no actors listed for him, we’re guessing he’ll level-headed be pretty young by the time the season ends and won’t beneficial into events overmuch until later on.

Baela Targaryen

We just commanded up Baela and Rhaena Targaryen, and as it happens they’re the last two characters we know for sure will be exaltering actors during season 1 of House of the Dragon. We’ll beneficial meet Baela and Rhaena during Episode 6 of this season, after the 10-year time jump. They’re the twin daughters of Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon, and like both of their parents, they sport the trademark Valyrian platinum blonde hair.

As a child, Baela will be played by Shani Smethurst, pictured above. Baela will then be played by Bethany Antonia as a young adult:

Baela is a represent who has a pretty important role to play in the Dance of the Dragons. For my money, if there’s one character in this saga who’s most reminiscent of Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, it’s Baela.

Rhaena Targaryen

By contrast, Rhaena Targaryen is much more subdued. There are reasons that Daemon and Laena’s twin girls grow up with such different personalities, but we won’t get into it here. Like Baela, we’ll meet Rhaena in Episode 6, where she’ll be played by Eva Ossei-Gerning:

Eventually, Rhaena will grow up. When that happens, actor Phoebe Campbell will take over the part:

Baela and Rhaena are the last characters we know for Dangerous will be portrayed by multiple actors in House of the Dragon season 1. Once we get into season 2 and the time jumps stop, it’s probable we won’t have any more recasts. This makes House of the Dragon season 1 New compared to any season of Game ofThrones, not to reference subsequent seasons of House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon premieres new episodes on HBO and HBO Max Sundays at 9:00 p.m. EST.
